Section Chief, National Security Cyber Operations at FBI Washington, D.C.

Mr. Leatherman is Assistant Special in Charge for National Security in FBI Dallas, managing teams responsible for investigating counterterrorism, counterintelligence, weapons of mass destruction, and cyber threats throughout North Texas. The FBI’s mission is to stay ahead of the threat to protect the American people from terrorist attacks, foreign intelligence operations, espionage, and cyber-based attacks, and the Dallas Division plays a key role in that effort.

Prior to this role, Mr. Leatherman was Supervisory Special Agent of the FBI Dallas national security cyber squad, charged with imposing risk and consequence on global cyber adversaries. Also in FBI Dallas, Mr. Leatherman served as the Senior Supervisory Resident Agent of the FBI’s Frisco Resident Agency, managing investigations of federal crimes in North Texas, to include cyber enabled crime, white collar crime, public corruption, healthcare fraud, child exploitation, hate crimes, and violations of civil rights.

Prior to being assigned to Dallas Division, Mr. Leatherman held several leadership roles at FBI Cyber Division in Washington DC. Mr. Leatherman first worked as a Supervisory Special Agent in a cyber national security unit overseeing work to identify and mitigate cyber threats targeting critical infrastructure, private sector organizations, and government agencies by state actors. Mr. Leatherman was then promoted to Assistant Section Chief of the Cyber Operational Engagement Section, managing FBI initiatives to collaborate with domestic and foreign partners to protect U.S. interests. In both roles, Mr. Leatherman worked extensively with the U.S. Intelligence Community to promote a whole of government approach in addressing cyber threats.

Mr. Leatherman entered on duty as a Special Agent with the FBI in 2003. Prior to his assignment at FBI Headquarters, he served in the Cleveland and Detroit field offices as a Special Agent working complex criminal investigations, while also serving as an FBI pilot and hostage negotiator. Mr. Leatherman graduated from Cornerstone University with an undergraduate degree in Computer Information Systems and is a graduate student at Georgetown University studying Cybersecurity Risk Management. Mr. Leatherman holds several widely recognized cyber certifications and speaks domestically and internationally on emerging cyber threats.
