Circuit CJA Case Budgeting Attorney, Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals
Margaret Alverson (Meg) has served as the Circuit CJA Case Budgeting Attorney for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals since April 2016. Prior to becoming the Case Budgeting Attorney, she served as a senior staff attorney with the Louisiana Capital Assistance Center representing indigent defendants charged with capital crimes.
After graduating from Tulane Law School, Meg began her career as a criminal defense practitioner with The Legal Aid Society, Criminal Defense Division, New York, New York representing indigents charged with crimes at the trial court level. After leaving The Legal Aid Society, Meg entered private practice representing criminal defendants in state and federal courts in New York and Louisiana primarily at the trial court level.
She has handled complex federal criminal cases including RICO, Continuing Criminal Enterprise, major narcotics trafficking and fraud prosecutions. Her capital experience includes court-appointed representation of defendants charged with capital crimes in the state and federal courts. In addition to her experience as a litigator, Meg served as the Executive Director of the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers from 2009 to 2013.
